Stephanie Metz creates biomorphic abstract sculpture that explores the tension created when opposing qualities coexist. She works primarily in wool and industrial felt to create detailed, complex, and mysterious forms that defy their humble origins.
Stephanie Metz lives with her techie husband and two sons in San Jose, where she works from a studio at the Alameda ArtWorks downtown. She has been featured in publications including San Jose's Content Magazine, Adobe Inspire Magazine, American Craft, and 500 Felt Objects. Her work has been included in the Rijswijk Textile Biennial in the Netherlands as well as Sculptural Felt International and Black Sheep, touring exhibitions that visited Europe and Australia. Her numerous group exhibitions include FiberArt International at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and the Museum of Quilts and Textiles in San Jose, Formex Stockholm 2008 in Sweden, and Transmission:Experience Singapore.

Thanks so much! Art teacher look to possibly do this with a small high school class. Show how you ventilate and stay clean was very helpful.
Thanks for sharing this. I used to carve foam at a job where we made sculpture art for Las Vegas casinos. It's messy for sure!😅 Currently I am learning chainsaw and power carving. I love your idea for a mess containment area using plastic and zippers. I do my power carving indoors, and while I have a downdraft table, I was thinking of doing something similar using a small portable greenhouse,...and also a hazmat suit,...lol. I love the work, but not the mess tracking everywhere. Also, I just love learning from your creative process. Never know what I might want to try in the future. Subscribed! 👍😊
👍👍
Tools name plz
Thank you sooooo much for this amazing video! I love the emphasis on personal safety when sculpting with the materials. What glue do you use to fuse the pieces together?
Fabulous!
This was by far the most informative workshop regarding Knowing Your Needle -felting Tools. You presented this information with useful information, enthusiasm and experience. You covered very basics , which In my experience have been left for the felted to discover only to feel unsatisfied and frustrated with the finished project. Excellent presentation ! I thank you and look forward to applying these much needed tools to the craft.
You're creative 💯 and sexy🔥❤️
What type of tools does one need?
I hope it is as easy as it looks!
hola donde se pueden comprara esas herramientas de corte.Gracias
Beautiful artwork.
Can you provide a link to the respirator you use please? Or more information on what is required to prevent breathing in the fumes? Thanks
What respirator do you recommend?
Amazing work, thank you for sharing. We recently saw turtles in the wild at Mon Repos (Queensland, Australia) guided by rangers, researchers and volunteers. We saw females digging holes laying their eggs and we also saw hatchlings emerging from other egg clusters and we helped guide them to the water. I have wanted to make a turtle since then and have been looking for a good tutorial on how to do it. I'm glad I found yours.
Nice.
Hi just wondering if you are still posting videos.
Beautiful was it designed after your cat 🐈?
I love the cat 🐈⬛
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Beautiful work!
WHERE can one buy the hot-wire foam cutters??
I'm in awe
Excellent - thank you!
That's beautiful! You are amazingly talented! You have a lot of patience attaching the pieces, I find it easier to leave some looser fluff on the ends rather than cutting it. Cutting wool shortens the fibers and makes it much harder to felt.
Great video, great work thx!
Hi from Houston! Hope you're doing well
it has such a wonderful effect, like subsurface scattering making skin glow a bright red
Nice! 👌 I was looking for some tutorials on how to sculpt styrofoam and found your work. Your Overbreeding series and wool drawings are really cool too!
That looks like plaster, what kind of marble is that?
You can’t just make that and not expect me to think of a dilated asshole
This is amazing on so many levels. I had never thought of making a 3D sculpture to then create a fabric pattern! I’ve been stuck for years in a project that I wanted to created a stuffed raccoon but didn’t know how to cut the fabric to form a stuffed head. I may have to use this method!
I fell down the rabbit hole this morning when I found one of your wool "paintings" on Instagram. That let me to your website which led me to your RUclips channel. I tried needle felting a decade ago and loved it. But, I was thoroughly engrossed in polymer clay at the time. However, I kept thinking about how to combine the two in jewelry. This morning, I watched your In Touch video which was completely enchanting. I'm afraid you are forcing me to go back to trying needle felting again. I've got a little kit that someone gave me which I'll try before figuring out what else I want. Your online class sounds intriguing too. I should also say how much I enjoyed looking at your paintings and sculpture. Their organic nature is right up my alley. Thanks for all the great info, inspiration and temptation!
I've always wanted to learn how to carve a turd outta foam Who else
Goofy beautiful😊
Hope you keep moving with this forward
What a gift to all of us Artists & Crafts persons! Priceless information you are sharing , Thank You!
so plump
so cool!
thank you!
Anyone know how to restring a foam cutter like this?
Oh I thought it was something else……………………………………eek
I am loving that confidence to cut into the piece to adjust flipper position and to add the armature. But, of course!! It felts back together!! Ha!!
Thank you. I'm going to be carving some pieces for an underwater photoshoot I'm doing and this was really helpful.
Love your curved cutters! What brand?
Yes I also would like to know
WOAH ❤
i love this
I thought it was a finger sticking through a piece of paper 😂
Bruh i thought it was a trippy rock or something at first
Omg hello Stephanie! I wasn’t expecting you to just show up on my feed! I’m local and have been enjoying your sculptures in person.
There's no electricity running in the wire like you said.
Where did you get your Hot-wire tool
The link to Hot Wire Foam Factory is in the notes under the video. 😊
